Menos armas, más salud y protección social

Inspirados en sus mensajes y su liderazgo global por la paz y la dignidad humana, queremos hacer llegar un mensaje a todos los gobiernos del mundo en procura de buscar formas de convivencia y de protección social para hacer frente a la Pandemia y sus consecuencias.
La pandemia provocada por el COVID-19 ha puesto en evidencia un orden de prioridades contrario a los intereses más vitales de la humanidad. Tomas Piketty autor de “El capital del siglo XXI” ha documentado el crecimiento de la inequidad y la concentración económica en todo el mundo. De otra parte instituciones especializadas calculan que “el gasto militar mundial en 2018 fue de 1,822 billones de dólares, el 2,1% del PIB mundial o 239 dólares por persona. El gasto total creció por segundo año consecutivo y superó los 1,800 billones por primera vez; fue un 2,6% superior al de 2017 y un 5,4% superior al de 2009” (Sipri 2019).
Cuando la Paz, la Protección Social y los Derechos Humanos pasan a la última prioridad, la economía y la sociedad no son viables ni sostenibles. Por eso, el señor Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas ha realizado dos grandes llamados a la humanidad. Un “Llamado a la Acción por los Derechos Humanos” y un llamado a un “Cese al Fuego Global”, para crear condiciones que permitan enfrentar las manifestaciones y secuelas del coronavirus. Similares mensajes han sido planteados también por el Papa Francisco.
En sintonía con estos llamados, suscribimos la presente petición a los gobiernos del mundo para que reduzcan significativamente los recursos que hoy invierten en la fabricación y compra de armas, y los destinen, a fortalecer la salud pública, a garantizar la bioseguridad de las y los trabajadores, al desarrollo de la investigación científica para contrarrestar las pandemias y atender la grave crisis social y económica derivada de la actual emergencia sanitaria, la cual ha golpeado duramente a los pueblos y en general a los sectores sociales más vulnerables en diferentes países.

Inspired by your global leadership and your message for peace and human dignity, we would like to extend a message to all governments across the globe in hopes of assembling and strengthening social protection measures to face the pandemic and its consequences.
The COVID-19 pandemic has shed light on a set of priorities contrary to the most vital interests of humanity. Thomas Piketty, author of “Capital in the Twenty-First Century” has documented growth in economic concentration and inequality all around the world. On the other hand, specialized sources estimate that “global military spending in 2018 reached 1,822 billion dollars, a figure equal to 2.1% of the world GDP or 239 dollars per person. Furthermore, total military spending continued to grow for a second consecutive year and for the first time went over the 1,800 billion figure; it was 2.6% greater than that of 2017 and 5.4% greater than that of 2009” (Sipri 2019).
At a time where Peace, Social Protection and Human Rights occupy the last priority, economies and societies are neither viable or sustainable. Because of that, the General Secretary of the United Nations has made two important calls for humanity. A call of “Action for Human Rights” and a call for a “Global Cease fire”, with the aim of fostering conditions to face social movements and possibly new more developed strains of coronavirus. A similar message to the one Pope Francis has delivered.
In conformity with the aforementioned we subscribe the following petition for all governments to significantly reduce the amount of resources spent in the manufacture and commercialization of weaponry, and shift their investment to strengthen public health, guarantee biosecurity for workers, develop scientific research to counter future pandemics and attend the deep social and economic crisis that stems from the current sanitary emergency, and has dealt a significant impact on communities and more broadly the most vulnerable social sectors in different countries.
